Bottom ash is the slag or solid residue from waste combustion, recovered from the lower exit of a furnace. There is difference between household waste incineration bottom ash and special industrial waste incineration bottom ash:
Current regulations classify household waste bottom ash as recyclable, treatable or storable. Recyclable bottom ash can be used for road construction.
Special industrial waste bottom ash is treated at landfills or recycled.
¡EComposting
A biological process that uses air to accelerate the decomposition of organic waste to produce compost. The composting reactions release heat that steriLiTzers the compost (i.e. eliminates the pathogenic agents provided by the incoming waste). The compost can then be used as an organic amendment as it improves soil structure.
¡EHazardous Industrial waste
Waste produced by industrial process which present a danger to human health or the environment and requires adapted treatment. The classification of a waste as ¡§hazardous¡¨ is subject to national and/or regional regulations.
¡EIncineration
A thermal waste treatment method. Incineration consists of combustion, using different technologies and temperatures based on the type of waste, and flue gas treatment. The technique yields three types of residue: clinkers, ash and flue gas treatment residues. The heat generated by incineration is recovered to produce energy (electricity and heat) in most plants.
¡ELeachates:
During their storage, and in combined action to rainwater and natural fermentation, waste produce a liquid called ¡§leachate¡¨. Rich in organic material and trace elements, leachate cannot be discharged directly into the environment and must be carefully collected and treated.
¡ELandfill site:
A final repository for waste, which meets strict licensing and planning requirements. They intend to isolate the waste from the surrounding media and define post-closure and site rehabilitation methods.
¡ESolidification
Mixing the fly ash with cement, water and chelate agent, and then packing the solidification into huge bags. Few days later, this solidification will be delivered to landfill for ultimate disposal. After treatment, the heavy metal will be confined in the solidification, which prevents the hazardous substance pollution the environment and conforms to the criteria established in the regulations.
¡EWaste-to-Energy (Incineration) Plant
Waste incineration plants that recover energy to produce electricity or supply a heating network.
